Here's the storey (long)... I did the IMRC delete a couple weeks ago and went for a tune right after. While on the dyno I could hear and see on the graph a few missfires as the car pulled through the rpms. The car had a manually adjustable MAF sensor on it called "the optimizer" and a "MAFterburner" which the tuner had a hard time with, so he replaced it with a used Jet MAF... the car still had a missfire and he suggested a new 90mm LMAF. I picked up the new MAF yesterday and installed it without being back on the dyno and the car still has the same issues even while cruising around.
So far I have replaced and gapped the plugs at .34, replaced the fuel filter and ensured none of the plug wires are in contact with each other. I have been doing some reading and it seems alot of people are having trouble with MSD wires and the DIS-4 ignition and I am kind of leaning toward one of these things now, as some of the symptoms reported sound like mine. I am going to disconnect the MSD ignition tonight and give that a try. I also have a new set of Ford wires coming tomorrow morning and then I am off to the dyno again in the afternoon, but if anyone has any other suggestions please feel free to throw it out there! This is getting very frustrating! Thanks! |

I know how you feel about frustration, misfires are always annoying.
I can't say I have any specific input for you, but I have had nothing but problems with MSD stuff myself, and suspect that could be a place to start. Best of Luck and keep us posted.

Chasing ignition problems suck. I don't envy you right now. Get the stock ignition back on and see if that makes a difference and let us know.

Sometimes your timing is just too aggressive. To rule this out, pull a few degrees timing and run it again. If the anomalies are gone, you have found the culprit. This is just one thing to try, and may very well not solve the problem. Good luck.

Sorry to here about the problems you are experiencing with your Cobra. A while back we were having some issues with our Cobra aswell, similar to what you are describing. If its not your MSD stuff...Try what I did with our '96 Cobra.
I though the problem with our '96 was in the ignition, but it turned out it wasn't that at all. I had read in a few places to try sucking "Seafoam" in through the PCV valve and shutting the engine down for an hour and then take it out for a good hard run to clean all the carbon deposits and shit out of the engine...Well to my surprise it worked! Talk about a difference in performance, I had no idea that it was working that poorly until it worked the way it was supposed to. It was definitely worth the $12 at NAPA, which is the only place you can buy it in Canada. Here is a thread explaining how to do it... FAQ: SN95 common issues. - SVTPerformance This may or may not solve your problem, but it will still improve performance from your engine after many years of carbon and shit building up in it.

It was the damn MSD wires!!! I put the new Ford ones on and it's running like new again! Now I'm off to the dyno to try for a retune. Thanks to everyone who replied with suggestions! Ten years ago when I was into fox bodies MSD was a good product, I guess that's not the case now....

I have never heard anything good about msd wires, i always use the ford racing wires and they are usually around $20.00 cheaper to purchase. Glad that solved your problem.

Back from the dyno last night with better results than last time... new fuel filter, plugs, 90mm MAF, JLT air intake and of course the new Ford wires. No more choppy curve! wohoo!
