any 4x4 guys here

Still trying to find a daily driver truck... this one was only 800 bucks haha.

The truck I went to look at is a 1987 ford ranger xlt, 2.9L V6, 4x4, 5spd.

Sounds like the transfer case makes a loud grinding noise in every gear execpt 4th. (when it was even in 2wd mode)

Anyone know what the problem is? and cost of getting it fixed?

Thanks

Grinding noise in every gear but direct drive, perhaps something along the lines of transmission cluster shaft bearings. Just a thought based on your description, ronburgundy is a transmission guy so hopefully he'll chime in.

does it have the hubs that can be locked or unloocked? I had a pathfinder that sounded similar to what you are describing .
we changed the front hubs ,noise went away .
not sure if this is your problem or not . just thought I'd throw that out there.
it's been my experience 4x4's =$ .
that being said I still wouldn't be without one.

pretty positive its not manual locking hubs.. and its touch 4x4. It sounded too loud to be hubs. like metal on metal grinding.

bearing in the t-case?
does it do it all the time or just after you have had it in 4x4?
mine was just after I took it out like RrRrRrRrRrR CLUNK CLUNK and I could feel it catching. do have acess to a lift? maybe you could have some sit in it and put it in gear while you listen under neath.
