5.0L Engine Returns to Ford Lineup

Enter the new "Coyote"

A move I hope sees the light of day, again the Mustang crowd might be saying, "LS-What?"

Return of the 5.0: Ford Exec confirms 400 hp 'Coyote' V8 coming in 2010

When the 2010 Ford Mustang debuted, there was a collective groan among the pony car faithful that Ford didn't update the aging 4.6-liter V8 along with the 'Stang's new sheetmetal. So when a few spy shots surfaced in January showing a new aluminum engine nestled under the hood of a Mustang mule, we knew the Blue Oval had something else up its sleeve ? and now we have confirmation.

According to Ford Australia's product development director, Russell Christophers, FoMoCo's U.S. team is working on an all-new, aluminum double-overhead cam 5.0-liter V8 ? codenamed "Coyote" ? with output expected to crest 400 hp and around 400 lb-ft of torque. Christophers told Australia's Drive, "I have seen the performance curves and it is a pretty good engine."

The new 32-valve, 5.0-liter V8 is expected to be fitted to the Mustang and F-150 sometime in 2010, replacing the current 4.6- and 5.4-liter mills. And with the inevitable option of the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 making its way under the Mustang's hood, Ford looks to be bringing the fight to the new Chevrolet Camaro.

+1000000 if it does happen. I was heartbroken when they took away the 5.0 for the 4.6 (no offense to 4.6 owners). The 4.6 has since proven itself but I have a soft spot for the 5.0 (even though it probably won't be the same 5.0)

That's a given.

Look at the stats:

An all-new, aluminum double-overhead cam 5.0-liter V8 ? codenamed "Coyote" ? with output expected to crest 400 hp and around 400 lb-ft of torque.

Ah...I see.

The new 5.0 may be an aluminum block, but I haven't been able to read that to confirm it.

I'm sure someone will have that info shortly.

Last i heard the Coyote was cancelled. Could have changed as i have not been following it. The big hit has been the Roush small block pushrod engines, and i believe that is what Ford is going with. It has taken Ford 20 years to realize that they did not need to waste all the money they did building the mod engines. I mean get real, why did they do it? Hummm, lets see, build and under acheiving 4.6 engine that would fit into a low hood to allow designers to make a more aero body.
Okay was it the 03/04 Cobra engine that really made them stick out? I mean get real, they could have spent alot less money and kept developing the Windsor engines and not needed to have a factory supercharger to get the low end torque you get from a 4.6 cobra or a 5.4 Shelby. If ford would have built a real 5.8 windsor with a factory supercharger, you would have never even heard of a 4.6 4 valve and would have had way more power than anything the mod engines would have produced. The biggest advance has been in the electronics and the ability to tune an engine. I am not saying that the mod motors are not good, they have proven themselves, but they still have not been able to make more power than an engine whose first design was in 1962. I hope Ford will wake up and build a new pushrod engine that is affordable for the average enthusiast to build and upgrade. How Much money does it take to build a 5.8 windsor to make 800 hp and how much does it take to make a 5.4 to make 800hp? Nobody can argue that point.

I'm with Pro SC. The average garage\backyard mechanic has been slowly pushed out and making it way too expensive for modding. Every time I think about the 4.6's now I can't believe it has friggin 4 valves. I remember when volkswagen was bragging about 3 lol. Maybe I'm just old school, but I think that kind of tech would have been put to better use on the 351/302 platform. Could you imagine a 4v dual overhead 351????? damn.

4v dual overhead 351 would b crazy i would like to c that happen. but the 5.0 would b sic as hell to i really hope they come out wit it i think they will doe bc they closed down a plant here in windsor and re opened it fo a new product and the product was the 5.0 for mustangs and the f150s it was in the agreenment. bringing bac the 5.0 would b so smart and a great thing to do
