Thinking about doing another Mod. Here is what I am thinking. We noticed that the yoke for my driveshaft was a little bit worn when doing the new u-joints, not real bad, but I know it's there. So, I was thinking about doing an Aluminum driveshaft with a new yoke and u-joints. Just so I know that little problem is gone, and while I'm at it, maybe putting in a driveshaft loop.
My other option is doing the Front brake upgrade to 13" drilled rotors with the Cobra calipers. I like the idea of the extra stopping power and well, sadly to say the look of the bigger brakes with the nicely drilled rotors. What you you guys do? ![]() |

Tough choice, really my vote would be for the brakes. However I'm not really sold on the cross drilled rotors. Most cost effective units are just drilled Kelsey-Hayes which are prone to cracking and warping. However you would not go wrong with a set of powerslots and load all of your calipers with a Hawk Street compound. That would be a huge difference.
On the Driveshaft side, as long as everything is decent enough for safety sake I wouldn't worry on it. But not seeing the DS in person is is difficult to make that assessment correctly. The gains realized by the lighter rotating mass of the Aluminium DS are real, but I'm not sure if they would be enough that you would noticed them. I've driven before and after in my friend's Fox and I couldn't notice any difference personally. A safety loop is another excellent piece of Safety equipment but is generally only required if you run a slick type tire. Neither path would be a bad decision, but my vote is for the brake upgrade, you will feel the difference multiple times a day and there is a saying; "you only get the chance to stop once." But as always you, the guy spending the cash, is best suited to make the decision. Hope this helps you with your modding.

Thanks for a couple more things to way into this. As for the rotors, they would either be Brembo's, which are pretty pricey, like $330 for the fronts or Baer's. They have some new stuff out, and from what I hear, are a very good quality. I was looking at the Powerslots as well.... but right now they are in third place for the rotors.

Based off of Brembo's or Baer's go for it, not many people are will to lay out that kind of cash fora consumeable part like a rotor. So that brand selection was kind of unexpected.

I figure there is no use in doing something if it ain't gonna be done right. Besides, as much as I drive my car, they will last for years!!! The car also never really see any rain.....

HEAR HEAR!!!!! Looking at all the other mods you've done DMW, I don't think there was ever any doubt about that!! I think you may have answered your own question.I'm voting for the brake upgrade. Besides...they'll look real purty in behind those new rims!!! ![]() |

So many of us (myself included) add a bunch of power mods and forget (ignore) the brakes. Our cars didn't have the best of brakes in the first place. I'm one of the worst offenders because my 86's brakes carried onto the 4 banger car. I don't even have the lame 5.0L brakes I have 4 cyl brakes.

+1 for brakes, I'm at least going to upgrade my 84 brakes to 91 version front and rear as a first step, eventually on to a baer setup likely.
I would have let you know the aluminum driveshaft affected my car, but it won't be a good evaluation since the driveshaft is being replaced along with the entire drivetrain including engine...it will probably be better I think... Rotors are consumables and I agree not to skimp there, good plan. Warped rotors just plain suck to have, especially if you paid a premium over stock |

There's no point in adding power and speed to your car if you can't stop. I vote for brakes.

I'd do Cobra brake kit with regular smooth rotors. When I had my driveshaft out last it was pretty light anyway I thought it was aluminum, lol.

Well, I made my decision. I am going to go with the Cobra brake upgrade for the front. The rotors are going to be the Baer EradiSpeed 13" front and back. I decided to do the rotor upgrade to 13's on the back as well.
![]() This means that when I decide to run some slicks, the smallest wheel I'll be able to run will be 17", but oh well. Probably going to throw in some steel braided cables as well. But.... I just had to lend the Fiance $1000 bucks to pay for her license and final exam fees.... so I may have to wait for another paycheck or so.... Last edited by DMW : 04-19-2008 at 10:00 PM. |

Bling bling rotors! Just changed my original factory pads @ 135,000 kms to Hawks, I'm not hard on brakes! I do want to do the 13" kit up front though.

No sense doing half the job-should look pretty good with the rims you have. Steel braided cables are a nice touch as well.
Nice move loaning the fiance the cash- gives some good leverage for future discussions about mods!!!! ![]() |
