Question Importing a Mustang to Canada?

Does any of you know if it's admissible to buy a Mustang in the States and import it to Canada?

The toll free # for the Registrar of Imported Vehicles is 1-888-848-8240, or you can contact them on their website provided by SonicStang. I found them to be very helpful. Before you purchase the vehicle check with RIV to see what modifications that particular vehicle requires to complete the Federal Inspection. I'll briefly list the steps to do once you have purchased the vehicle. Ask the US dealer to provide you with an Oasis Report, a report from the manufacturer stating if there are any recalls on that vehicle, which you will have to provide when you have your Federal Inspection done. If there are any outstanding recalls on the vehicle, you have to have the repairs done in the US before bringing the vehicle to Canada. Make sure the dealer puts their stamp on the Oasis Report. You can bring the vehicle into Canada with a Paper Plate and insurance for transporting the vehicle provided by your carrier. Transporting the vehicle to Canada with a Paper Plate, a temporary license plate from the state you purchase your vehicle from-approx cost $15, exempts you from paying the state tax. The dealer will help you with that. Then you fax the Certificate of Title to US Customs location you will be travelling through at least 72 hours in advance. When you arrive stop at US Customs before proceeding into Canada. They will check your vin # and then stamp your Cert. of Title. At Canada Customs you will produce your Cert. of Title and your sales agreement. They will convert the US price to Canadian and charge you 6% GST , $100. a/c tax and a $209. processing fee. Canada Customs will then issue you with a Vehicle Import Form-Form 1. Two weeks later you will be sent a letter of instructions and a Vehicle Import Form-Forum 2. You will have to do the modifications listed on form 2 and then go and get a Federal and Provincial inspection. When completed you then can register the vehicle with the province and pay any applicable sales tax. You can speed up the form 2 process to 3 days by emailing RIV, Canada Customs will provide you with that info. All in all it is a very easy transaction to do considering all the mis-information you will recieve from Canadian dealers and especially their sales staff. The Canadian $ is at $.945 , the savings on a 07 GT should be between $6000. -$9000. The only modification I had to do on my new 06 GT was daytime running lights. The Ford dealer emailed Ford Canada the Vehicle Import Form Regisration# and Ford downloaded the information to the dealer so my daytime running lights could be programed through the modular on my vehicle. It cost me $42.

Question about importing. I've seen some nice 10 second rides in the u.s for 10K or less. Does the car have to pass inspection once brought into canada? I'm thinking yes. I can just imagine what they would say when you cranked up a Fox with a stroked windsor, solid roller cam , carb.

I've also seen some nice roller with cages ect. You can't pass inspection untill the drivetrain is in right.

The Registrar of Imported Vehicles will give you all the information needed for the vehicle you want to import . Federal and Provincial inspections are mandatory.

Darn thats what i thought. I can't see a car with a cage, lumpy cam and a carb passing inspection here in quebec. Maybe if it was a mid-late 60's mustang.

If you buy a 1992 manufactured before June that model year, you do not need to meet the stringent RIV requirements, so I'd take that into account. Those requirments only reach back 15 years, so if you buy a 93, you'll have to have the DRL's installed, and all the other strict RIV requirments. Older than 15 years it only has to pass your provinces local emission requirements and pass a standard inspection ( battery tie down, brakes in good order etc etc ).

I researched a ton before I finally found a Notch locally, and I even got quotes from two importation companies for doing all of the legwork for you. I'll try and dig it up and forward it. From memory it ranged in the $500-1000 range, with one of them completing the importation by delivering the car to you in Canada. They have their own border brokerage site on the US site, and you ship the car there.

that's really good to know... thanks ryan. I'm looking at investing in a little something and it's registered in washington.

1992 black on black LX hatch. I can pick this little fixer upper up for 2k. The good thing is it used to be a canadian car...

Reddog is exactly correct in his importation procedure. I did the same thing last year on a new 06 Mustang GT premium purchased in Montana. The only difference was that once I got the import papers, I went back to the US dealer with the case number on the top of the import form and the dealer called the Ford Hotline with that number and they turned on the daytime running lights by computer for free. My savings at that time (C $ about .86) was about $5,500.0 over buying it locally.

I've actually thought about starting up a business on my own and looking for good solid cars in the states and importing them into Canada and selling them for a reasonable price...I even have thought about being a locater for people looking for a very specific car or truck..Not sure If I could make much $$$$ at it but Im thinking of making a go at it. What do you guy's think????

sounds feesable, just check your provincial regulations first. i believe in bc if you sell seven or more vehicles a year, then you need a dealer licence.
