Well I was talking with the people at the DMV in Maine today and found out that I can get a temporary plate to transport the car home from there. So the guy Im buying from said he would drive the car that far for me and then I'll take it from there after he removes his plates and I put the temp's on...So I guess its all coming together now.

***UPDATE***

Well due to some unforseen things over the last week or 2, including Jury Duty, newborn baby girl (6 weeks old now), oh and that little thing called work! We were unable to get the car as of yet. Everything looks to be a go for Monday and Tuesday, so hopefully by the end of the week next week the Cobra will be parked in our driveway.

BTW...The current owner agreed to leave the plates on the car until we get 'er home. Then I'll send them to him in the mail. He offered and Im appreciative of his cooperation.

I'll keep everyone posted on the progress, and hopefully my wife will join the site after we get the car home.

Is there any difference of importing a vehicle that has not ever been registered in the USA, and is new but not the current model year?
I am not talking just a few years but under 15. I am thinking i have this all down except the classification of a vehicle, is it considered new if never licensed but is older? Does that make any difference? I can't see why it would but you never know.

Not much difference. If you register it in the US like I did last year, the certificate of title is given to you by the State MV. If you do not register the vehicle, you get the title from the dealer. The only reason for this exercise from US customs is to try to prevent auto theft from the US. I've been hearing different things about paper plates[drive-out] on this thread. Here in Arizona you purchase a paper plate from AZMV for $15, good for 90 days and for driving through all states as a paper plate is a PLATE but temporary and the expiration is listed on the plate. I just purchased a near new 07 GT/CS and will be picking it up this Monday. Not only can I drive it for the 90 days on the plate, but also I have full insurance coverage with AAA for 6 months. When I get it into Canada, once I have completed the RIV requirements, the balance of the unused insurance is refunded.

If its a new never registered vehicle then you must get the manufacturer's certificate of origin. The dealer should have that. This preludes the need for the title at the border. This is also good as if it's new then you shouldn't need a Provincial Inspection once you go to register. You still need the recall papers, RIV inspection and daytime running lights turned on.
Hope this helps.

Yes it does, thanks. It still is treated as a new vehicle.

It is definitely worth the effort to check out the US market. riv.ca answers all the questions and if not the 1-800 # people are very knowledgeable and informative. You can even call them in the evening and wow a government department that was actually interested in helping you out was a nice change. Have all your ducks lined up with the US boarder crossing 72 hours ahead and it is a breeze, plus if the car is newer, make sure you have your factory recall clearance letter done before you hit the Canadian border. In Canada, the dealerships want to charge you, but if you buy the car from a Ford Dealership the recall clearance letter can be done on their letterhead for free. Also at the border, provide them with your e-mail address and tell them you want to correspond through your e-mail. I had all my documentation e-mailed to me within 48 hours as opposed to a couple of guys I know that did it by regular mail - that took over two weeks. Google transport companies (car carriers), I had quotes for as low as $1,500. I ended up picking mine up - road trips are always fun. As for prices, yes they are so much cheaper. I picked my car up for a lot less than an '08 GT in Canada and not much more than used '06s were going for in Saskatchewan. Well worth the time.

Right on GT-H 227. I've being in contact with RIV and found them to be very helpful and accomodating with all the information for assisting you with your purchase of a vehicle in the US. They clear up a lot of Dealer- salesman BS. I've just purchased my second vehicle here in the US within the last 16 months, An 07 GT/CS at a savings of $8000. With our par dollar this is definately the time to buy a Mustang in the US. There also in no shortage of Shelby snakes, lots of availability.

I am currently looking to buy from the states. I have a dealer that will deal with everything for me, I just pay him directly once the car is here. From what he told me on the phone I can expect savings of 7-10 thousand dollars on a 2007 GT convertible.

He is in the Ottawa area if anyone is interested I can give you his information.
