Manual steering..

What are most of you running? I'm not looping the lines on my power rack, so that's out. I'm not looking to spend a mint either. It's for my 89.

I have a flaming river rack and shaft. Works fine. I have the slow ratio rack - it's a little over 4 turns lock to lock. Their shaft and U-joint sure improve the header clearance. My 2" primaries clear no problem.

Everyone one I talk to hates the design of the set screws on their flaming river racks. I've never used one of there racks, but I probably wouldn't bother with it after all the input I've recieved. I'm probably going to just stick with the MM unit.

Would I be able to use a factory Manual rack from an 81 or so? Would that bolt up to my existing shaft?
Thanks
Eric

They work OK, but you have to locktite them. There is a little fabrication involved in countersinking the shaft for the set screws too, but it seemed pretty par for the course on my car. Everything involves a little fabrication on that thing!

I know what you mean, always a project to be done for any little change. I always seem to be in that very same boat.

I am using a manual rack from a 78 Fairmont in my 86 Mustang as it is the same as a factory Mustang one.If you get one from a car at the wreckers make sure you get the steering coupler which goes between the rag joint and the input shaft of the rack.Manual racks and power ones use a different sized input shaft with a different spline so you need the correct coupler to bolt it to your steering shaft. There was also a change in the style of steering rack mounting bushings done sometime in the mid 80's so you need to use the ones that are correct to your car.As long as the car is moving manual steering is fine, the only time is takes a lot of effort is when the car is parked.

I'm leaving the car power, my lady wants to wheel it. My Capri is getting manual though.

Thanks for the input
