T5 Transmission problems

My first post here, hope someone can help.

I've got the transmission out and mostly apart lol, on the Shaft and Hub Assembly, there is a small ball in the shaft. Instructions stay "remove ball and spring". Ball rotates, but will not push in or fall out.

Anyone know what holds that ball in?

Darren5.0L had a thread up, with great photo's, but it stops where I need the info at.

Welcome to the MC site scooterdog.

I'm sure Darren5.0L will chime in when he gets online.

You're most likely right, but it's a holiday long weekend up here and most of the members are enjoying the time off. The techs will most likely be back online sometime tomorrow.

Hang in there.

I see. Perhaps I should have noticed "mustang CANADA".

I know I'll feel like an idiot when it's explained to me how to get that damn thing out!

Welcome aboard scooterdog. It's not a ball. It's a "roll pin" in the reverse/5th shaft. Use a 5mm (3/16 in) pin punch and hammer to knock it out of the shaft.

Also there is a inhibitor spring, reverse shift lever, and reverse shift fork, (3 items) that have to come out as well. That should have been your previous step before the pin.

You have 7 steps left before final disassemble to a bare case. If your not sure on those directions shoot me a pm, or I can list the steps here. Sometimes directions can be a PITA.

I've beat on it for two days, that damn thing won't budge. It WILL NOT go into the shaft. It spins free, I see no way it can be held it, but it is. I can hit it again, with a sledge hammer, but I'm afraid I'll bust that shaft.

Instructions say " remove ball and spring". I'd like to take that tinker toy transmision to Ford and stick it where the sun don't shine at this point.

Try it from the other end. maybe it's tapered a bit or you have the head of the pin burred a bit. It has to come out because your reverse idler gear and overtravel rubber stop have to come off the shaft.

Never removed pin(ball). Tapped on shaft, pointed towards the top of the case, everything came apart.

Now, we know how proud ford is of their parts, lets see what this cost.

Thanks guys.

Welcome to the site scooterdog.

If your Mustang is such a piece of crap and causing so many problems for you, maybe it's time to move on to something a little less stressful....I've heard Civic's are pretty reliable lol.

Just kidding man...good luck with your problems....hope it works out and glad you found answers.

Glad you got it scooterdog. The pin must have been worn enough for the gear/rubber to slide over the shaft. The shaft might even be worn a bit.

Well, I knew it. Found on road dead wants a mere $1000 for parts. I wonder if those parts would hold up as well as the original tinker toy set they built these with.

I told them to shove it up their ass's and I'd buy another one. Parts man says "I know".

Hey, anyone know of any good salvage yards? I'm in Montana. I could use good used parts I guess. Just as long as the gears are from the same trans.

What would you guys do? Buy a used Trans. or attempt to rebuild one of these.

The countershaft is what is getting me. Ford wants over $800 for one. (Don't side step that clutch in reverse boys!)

Anyway, you guys have been great, and any direction you can point me in would be great. Thanks for the information.

Used trans can be hit and miss unless you can drive it first. If ford wants $1000 for parts, maybe buy a used trans and just salvage the parts you need from it.
