Video - Hood Scoop Sequential Signal Lights

Rather than continuing to hijack Sonic40's "New From Ottawa" introduction thread, I decided to post this explanation here.

A few people have asked about the "scoop sequentials" in my signature mods list. I wanted to try something a bit different and custom so decided to implement turn and brake signals into my scoop ala the late 60's/early 70's mustangs. I already had the CDC sequential tail lights and didn't have the nerve to cut big rectangular holes in the back of the scoop to retrofit old school lights so I opted for red 12 volt LED's. I went with 3 per side as in the tail lights and built a custom wiring harness to bring the 6 separate signals to the front.

After much humming and hawing I decided to use CAT5 wiring (computer network cable containing 8 leads). The wire is cheap and compact, and the terminals are readily available and easy to install. The cable runs through the trunk, up the passenger side door sill, through the firewall, and up behind the wheelwell where it joins up with the washer fluid hose. It then vanishes under the hood blanket and enters the scoop from the underside through a small grommeted hole in the hood.

The actual wiring is pretty straight forward and I soldered and shrink tubed all the end terminations. The harness contains four terminals so that the sections can be taken apart and put back together without having to resolder.

The LED's can be seen in this picture:

The following video shows the system in action:

Relatively cheap and easy custom mod. All in cost about $50 over and above the original cost of the CDC kit and took a day of figuring/install.

Took at least a week though to work up the nerve to take a drill to my custom painted scoop!

Ha ha ha ....... said it before, I'll say it again-is that ever clever/cool!! Even more so after checking out the video-nicely done klaw!! I can see not wanting to cut a hole in your scoop for the old school lights. The LED's kinda fit the whole modern/retro look, and are a very subtle touch.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I wasn't quite sure about whether I'd like the mod or not but am happy with it now that it's done. If anyone else wants to give it a go, I'd be happy to provide specific details.

As for next mods, I want to do a bit of driveline work (clutch, aluminum driveshaft, safety loops, and diff cover) to beef things up so that I can take it down the strip a few times. I've never had her on the strip and am very curious to see what she'd do. I've also ordered a line lock kit that should be in this week.

I have a couple years' worth of to-do's after that but will probably wait until winter to do anything more.

At least now I can say that my hood scoop is "functional"!
